Description
Traveling the Big Sur region of California we came upon Julia Pfeiffer State Park, the home of McWay Falls. This tidefall is rare to the region. The fresh water used to fall directly into the ocean. But in the 1980's a fire ravaged the area and left some of the steep drops without solid vegetation. Rains caused a slide just up the beach. After reconstruction started to repair the highway and fortify the cliffs the dirt that had gone into the Pacific was carried by the tide into the small cove and the waves built up the sand beach. Now the waterfall only hits directly into the ocean when the tides are high. It is a must see stop along the scenic Highway 1 route.
