Description
"A brave man is a man who dares to look the Devil in the face and tell him he is a Devil" ~ James Garfield
The James A. Garfield Monument stands on the grounds of the United States Capitol, in the National Mall area. It is a memorial to President James A. Garfield, elected in 1880 and assassinated in 1881 after serving only four months of his term.
Garfield entered politics as a Republican, after campaigning for the party's anti-slavery platform in Ohio. Garfield opposed Confederate secession, served as a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and fought in the battles of Middle Creek, Shiloh and Chickamauga. He was first elected to Congress in 1862 as Representative of the 19th District of Ohio. He completed nine consecutive terms in the House Of Representatives before being elected as the 20th President of the United States.
It is an impressive work sculpted by John Quincy Adams Ward, and originally unveiled in May of 1887. One wonders how his strong will and policies would have shaped the United States. He was succeeded by Chester A. Arthur.
