Description
White Rocks Lighthouse (Piedras Blancas) was completed as a 100 foot high signal for the bay that whaling ships would use and because there was a large expanse along the shore without proper warnings for ships. In 1948 an earthquake damaged the top of the structure so that the upper 30 foot level had to be removed. This changed the height to 70 feet and took away some of the great ornamental design that it originally had, and replaced the original signal.
I caught this distant photo while visiting the area and walking along the shore. Central California is one of the most scenic and beautiful areas of the United States. The rolling hills on the other side of the highway house the famous Hearst Castle. Prime real estate!
