Description
The Devil's Punchbowl, elevation 4,750 ft, is a tilted sandstone formation within the Angeles National Forest, California. It is a deep canyon categorized as a plunging syncline. The Canyon is 300 feet deep at the vista point. The peculiar uptilted rock formations found in the area are layers of sedimentary rocks formed long ago. Later they were squeezed into their present, steeply tilted form by ongoing uplift action along the Punchbowl and Pinyon Faults and by pressures along the San Andreas Fault. The Punchbowl Fault is to the south of the rock formation, while the Pinyon and San Andreas Faults are to the north.
This photograph was taken in 2010 while visiting this natural area located at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and looking from the trail around the canyon. I like the perspective captured from the trail, to the canyon, to the layers of hills and mountains.
