Description
San Carlos Borromeo de Monterey was founded by Father Junipero Serra on June 3, 1770, on the shores of Monterey Bay, as the cornerstone of his Mission. The structure in this photo was completed in 1794 and is the oldest continuously functioning church in the State of California. It is the first California Cathedral and also the first stone building built in the state. It has been well preserved through rigorous renovations while still keeping a museum like quality to highlight the historical significance it has played. It is an official National Historical Landmark.
This is the alter area of the sanctuary. Very small and simple in comparison to many of the historical Catholic Church buildings that we have visited here in California.
