Description
It's hard not to be transfixed by this amazing place and how people used to live. Montezuma Well housing is situated above a sinkhole spring on a limestone cliff.
The high concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide gas in the water of the Well , and to a lesser extent its alkalinity, has prevented the development of any kind of fish population, so the Well remains a fishless spring. Other types of aquatic life have managed to adapt: the Well supports at least five endemic freshwater species. Many different bird species feed on these organisms and the plant life found in the water. A few are in the water.
The Yavapai people consider the Well a deeply sacred site, as they believe it is the place through which they emerged into the world.

Conservation ( From American Heritage Waters)
Concerns over archaeological site pot-hunting and excavation encouraged area residents to propose the area as a national monument. President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed the Montezuma Castle National Monument on December 8, 1906, including 840 acres on and around Montezuma Well. After passage of the National Park Service Organic Act in 1916, the Monument was transferred to the newly formed National Park Service.
