I had to photograph this abandoned ranch home found in the back country of Pleasant Valley (aka Young). When I say back country, it truly describes this place. There is no fully paved road connecting Young with other highways. The two entries from below (Young is surrounded by the Tonto National Forest) are 13 miles of dirt road. Pleasant Valley sits at about 5100 feet.
It is a storied place where The Pleasant Valley War, sometimes called the Tonto Basin Feud, or Tewksbury-Graham Feud, was a range war fought in the years 1882–1892. This range war literally kept Arizona from becoming an official state for a brief time.
We spent 3 days here. It is about as peaceful as I have ever seen. There is one full-service restaurant, one gas station, which sells gas and diesel fuel, Buddi Gas and Mini Mart, two convenience stores, an auto parts store, an auto mechanic and of road racing team, a motel, numerous cabins and cottages for rent, a small medical center, a thrift shop, a public library, a refuse service, Valley Bar, and a weekly medical clinic. Young has an award-winning vineyard that has weekly wine tastings and serves gourmet dinners. Young also has a resident deputy and a volunteer fire department, and community center. Population is just over 600. And everybody knows everything!
